Making art where you see it

We are doing a remodel here, moving the back of the 2 story house out to expand the kitchen, family room, and two upstairs bedrooms.  Since the kitchen had been demolished, we have moved a temporary kitchen into the dining room, living with a microwave, toaster oven and fridge.

No sink, but we are getting used to paper products. I seem to be needed for endless discussions about when to do what, and how do I feel about crooked beam, and by the way if we straighten it, the bathroom tile will crack.  OK. So I'm hanging out here at home, and to stay out of the way, I'm hanging out in my art room, and amazingly, I'm making lots of art.  I have no excuse not to.

I started photographing some of the stacks and piles, and I'm sorting through my fabric, finding loads of stuff that looks like construction.

I also started putting some fabric out to be rusted.  I did this over a two week period and and now have it just about where I want it to be.

I've made one piece, for a show I'll be in soon, and will show it to you as soon as I'm allowed. And now I'm starting on a series, as I have so much to say about this, and lots of time to say it.

My daughter went through the streamlined kitchen in the dining room last year. She is so happy to have a completed kitchen.

Love the rusted piece.

We did our kithen remodel a couple of years ago. Fortunately we were still living in the old house, so didn't have to set up an offsite kitchen! Worth all the hassle. I'm sure you will love it all when it is finished. And that crooked beam--? You never know just how crooked your house is until some workman points it out to you! Ask me how I know.

An exciting time for you Karen, and worth it all in the end.

Been there/done that with the kitchen 2 years ago. Relatively painless, I have to say. And I am still in heaven with my new kitchen. A two-story addition is a whole 'nother story, but it will be great. Will you get a bigger studio?????

You article reminded me of our remodel a few years ago. We setup a kitchen in a small bedroom and did the dishes in the bathroom sink. Interesting what you do when you need to. I am very impressed that you are able to keep your work going. Stuff like this knocks me for a loop!

...lemonade out of lemons -- I like that attitude...

Karen, I think finding artistic inspiration in your construction project is brilliant and just shows what a dedicated artist you are! Looks like a massive undertaking -- I will look forward to seeing the results. And that rusted fabric? IT's gorgeous! I have sort of an aversion to rusted fabric and generally don't like the results I've seen ... but that piece looks worth the effort.

Well things seem to be moving along well with your reno! I'm amazed at how calm you sound. It was high drama around here when we redid our kitchen! LOL
Your rusted fabric is terrific...you did a great job of placing the washers! Love it!!!
