Edge of the Woods

I was asked to participate in a special exhibit entitled "Edges" at the Long Beach International Quilt Festival . My piece is titled "Edge of the Woods" and is a bit of a departure as far as technique. I had decided I wanted to do a picture within a picture of woods and decided to use a technique I learned of from Laura and Linda Kemshall's book "The Painted Quilt". I had tried this technique on a much smaller scale in a piece I made for my on line group http://twelveby12.blogspot.com/search/label/Water, and wanted to give it another shot. I stitched the fabric sandwich first, then went back in with acrylic paint and painted everything. It is a lot more challenging with a larger piece like this. This is definitely not my method of choice, but it was fun to stretch myself.

Karen, these colours combined seem a departure from what I've seen in your work. Maybe due to your other pieces addressing illness in some form...but I see, grays and blacks paired with a bright colour if I was asked to describe your palette prior to this piece (which I too love by the way)

Your piece is colorful and interesting and a terrific part of our special exhibit "Edges" that will debut at Festival in Long Beach. I can't wait to see the entire collection hanging in the convention center.
