TIF March

I've just finished the Take It Further challange for March. This month we needed to pay attention to detail Challenge for March. I looked over some pictures I had taken in Santa Fe last month and decided to use this one of an entry way to a gallery.
I used Saral to trace the image onto white cotton sateen, then stitched on all the lines. Then I got my fabric paints out and my roller and just rolled over the top. This is a method used by Laura and Linda Kemshall in their book "The Painted Quilt", and similair to a method used by one of my favorite fiber artists www.deidreadams.com . It's a little wierd for me to paint after the stitching but I think it's very effective

Katagami

After going to the LACMA a few weeks ago, we went over the the Craft and Folk Art Museum across the street. We saw an exhibit of "Contemporary Katagami: Works by Jennifer Falck Linssen". To quote the catalog "Katagami are handcarved paper stencils. This 1,200-year-old technique is used in katazome, a printing and dyeing process where rice-paste resist is printed through the stencil onto lengths of fabric, which are then dyed and embellished."
My pictures don't do justice to this art. To see more, go to www.jenniferfalcklinssen.com. Think

of the possibilities of using this method in fabric!

Acorn Gallery

Last night was the opening of "The Cutting Edge: New Works in Fiber Arts" at the Acorn Gallery in Los Angeles and Ted and I attended. The gallery was packed, partly I think because it was included in the monthly art walk.

As you can see, I was in good company for this show. These next few pictures try to capture the different images for those who couldn't make it

This exhibit continues until April 6th, so if you have time and are so inclined, please stop by

LACMA

Ted and I went to the L.A. Co. Museum of Art on Saturday to check out the new contemporary wing. We spent a wonderful day wandering around the whole museum. The picture below is of the Metro station near the museum. They put tumbling blocks to good use.

Next door to the museum are the La Brea Tar Pits and they were bubbling away with their oily brewThis is the fence surrounding the tar pits and I liked the design combined with the water moving in the background

These lamposts are from different areas and times in Los Angeles. Ted grew up in Los Angeles and as we were walking thru he was able to name all the neighborhoods they came from

The new contemporary art wing is fabulous with some really thought provoking exhibits. My favorite is the photography by Cindy Sherman She attacks female stereotypes with a vengance
We were both laughing at a woman who brought her son (around 10) to the exhibits but kept yanking him out of rooms when she spotted any female nudity. We wondered if she did this with contemporary work only, or if he wasn't allowed to see any nudity.
